December's Skill of the Month is the Hollow Body position. The Hollow Body position is one of the most important fundamental body positions in gymnastics. Hollow is the opposite of Arch.
Gymnasts hold and move through this position in many gymnastic skills, from beginner to advanced, on all apparatus. It requires the gymnast to engage all her muscles, most importantly the muscles in the core of the body.
To achieve a Hollow Body position, a gymnast can concentrate on curving the stomach and chest inward until the back is flat on the ground. However, Hollow Body position doesn’t have to be performed lying down. It can be done in the air and on the hands as well.
